La Mirada, CA

La Mirada's street pattern grew from a ranch-to-suburb conversion completed largely within a few years. Andrew McNally, cofounder of the Rand McNally publishing company, bought 2,300 acres of Rancho Los Coyotes land in 1888. He named the property Windermere Ranch, planted citrus and olives, and shipped its products on the Santa Fe Railway. The Neff family later operated much of the ranch and sold 2,218 acres in 1953. Development followed quickly: by 1956, builders had laid out 13 tracts and constructed 7,800 homes, most already sold. The resulting residential blocks, shopping centers, roads, and places of worship established much of the city's present form. Residents incorporated on March 23, 1960, under the name Mirada Hills. That November, 80 percent of voters approved returning to La Mirada, the name McNally had given the ranch.

By 1965, annexations had added nearby neighborhoods and the industrial area north of Artesia Boulevard. Industrial workplaces and large institutions sit alongside the subdivisions. An 87-acre business park was developed for light-industrial and warehouse-distribution uses, and a separate 40-acre corporate center contains about 800,000 square feet of office and industrial space. In fiscal 2024, the Norwalk–La Mirada Unified School District had 2,545 employees and Biola University had 1,391. US Foods, Kindred Hospital, and Makita also appeared on the principal-employer list, which spans education, health care, distribution, and manufacturing. Public activity gathers along La Mirada Boulevard. City Hall, the county library, the Resource Center, the Activity Center, and Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center sit in or near the civic-center area.

Splash! opened in November 2007 beside La Mirada Regional Park and occupies an 18-acre site. Its year-round swimming facilities include a 50-meter pool, a heated teaching pool, and a warm-water spa; Buccaneer Bay supplies a seasonal water-play area. The larger regional park and the golf course are county facilities, while the city operates neighborhood parks, athletic fields, a gymnasium, and recreation programs. Government offices, library rooms, swim lessons, sports, and senior activities share a civic district centered on La Mirada Boulevard. As of 2026, La Mirada Transit provided curb-to-curb shared rides within the city six days a week, with connections to regional bus and rail services. Farther along the same boulevard, La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts gives the city a regional cultural role.

The former movie house reopened as a performing-arts venue in September 1977, with Tony Bennett appearing at the opening celebration. The 1,251-seat theater now presents a professional mainstage series, youth productions, special events, and the La Mirada Symphony. As of July 2026, the theater reported over three million admissions since its 1977 reopening. Productions originating there have also toured nationally, including Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan. Older ranch history remains accessible at Neff Park. The 1892 Neff House, carriage barn, and grounds were donated for public use, and the city was offering third-Saturday tours as of July 2026. The producing theater occupies a former cinema on La Mirada Boulevard; at Neff Park, the ranch house and carriage barn remain among the postwar residential streets.
