La Mirada, CA

La Mirada started out as a sprawling olive and citrus grove founded in the late 1800s by Andrew McNally, co-founder of the famous mapmaking company Rand McNally. When the ranch land was sold to homebuilders in the 1950s, the entire suburban community took shape almost overnight. Thousands of mid-century single-family homes, neighborhood schools, and quiet tree-lined streets went up in just a few short years. While the city briefly incorporated under the name Mirada Hills in 1960, residents quickly voted to restore McNally's original choice, La Mirada. That thoughtfully planned layout still gives the town its peaceful, neighborhood-oriented feel today.

Sitting right along the border of Los Angeles and Orange counties, La Mirada offers an easy balance between suburban quiet and big-city accessibility. Most of the city is made up of well-kept residential tracts, but there is also a healthy local economy. Biola University sits on a scenic campus in the center of town, bringing a collegiate energy alongside major employers in healthcare, education, and light manufacturing. Daily errands and community events gravitate toward La Mirada Boulevard, which serves as a central spine for City Hall, the local library, and convenient shopping plazas.

For weekend recreation, the centerpiece is Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, an 18-acre complex featuring year-round competition pools, swim lessons, and Buccaneer Bay, a seasonal pirate-themed waterpark loved by local families. Right next door, La Mirada Regional Park spreads across rolling green hills with shaded walking paths, a popular 18-hole disc golf course, tennis courts, and a fishing lake. The area also features an 18-hole regulation golf course, neighborhood playgrounds, and a city-run shared transit service that makes getting around town remarkably easy.

Arts and local heritage also punch well above their weight here. The 1,250-seat La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts is widely regarded as one of Southern California's premier suburban venues, hosting Broadway-caliber musicals, touring concerts, and the local symphony. Meanwhile, the city's early agricultural roots are preserved at Neff Park, where visitors can stroll beneath mature eucalyptus trees and tour the original 1892 Victorian estate and carriage barn. Between its rich local history, great park system, and welcoming community vibe, La Mirada remains one of the area's most appealing places to settle down.
