La Plata, MD

As the county seat of Charles County, La Plata packs everyday convenience into a compact, manageable footprint. The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center sits right in town, and the main College of Southern Maryland campus is just down the road on Mitchell Road. Route 301 runs right through the center to handle major retail and dining needs, making errands and grocery runs simple. The town has an inviting look shaped by both its railroad history and its resilience. After a powerful tornado struck the downtown district in 2002, the community rebuilt the center with careful planning, creating wide sidewalks, neat landscaping, and a welcoming streetscape around the historic courthouse and old train station. Today, leafy residential neighborhoods branch off from the core, giving newcomers quiet residential living within a few minutes of local shops, dining spots, and town parks.
