About Labadieville

Labadieville is an Assumption Parish CDP stretched along Bayou Lafourche, where the road, the water, and the sugarcane fields tend to run in the same direction. The place was once called Brûlée Labadie, taking its name from French settler Jean Louis Labadie. The deeper history reaches back to the Chitimacha, whose territory extended from the Atchafalaya Basin toward the lower Mississippi; their presence around Lake Verret is part of the area’s older story. St. Philomene Catholic Church traces its local parish history to an 1842 mission at Brule Labadie. Louisiana Highway 1 follows the bayou corridor, with Labadieville about 13 miles south of Donaldsonville. This is bayou country with a long memory and a working landscape.
