About Lake Benton

Lake Benton sits on the shore of the seven-mile lake that shares its name, in a valley along Minnesota’s Buffalo Ridge. The city and its vicinity include some of the highest land in Minnesota, and the Bemis moraine forms a drainage divide between the Missouri and Mississippi River basins. U.S. Highways 14 and 75 carry traffic through this open prairie setting, while the lake gives the city a distinct center. The name came from Jessie Benton, daughter of Missouri senator Thomas H. Benton, after John C. Frémont saw the lake in 1838.

Lake Benton was platted in 1879 after a lakeshore meeting, and the Minnesota Legislature authorized the municipality in 1881. The railroad arrived in November 1879, when the community quickly collected businesses along its main street. A post office had been operating since 1873, and the city served as Lincoln County seat from 1881 until a series of votes and court decisions moved the seat to Ivanhoe in 1904. That county-seat chapter still shows up in the city’s scale and street arrangement. Lake Benton Area Historical Society operates the Heritage and Windpower Learning Center at 106 South Center Street, with exhibits and tours to windpower sites. The school traces back to 1876, giving the community an institution older than the official municipality. Small businesses, school activities, lake recreation, and the windpower sites on Buffalo Ridge all share the same horizon. Lake Benton’s local rhythm comes from that overlap: a lake town, a former county seat, a rail-platted business center, and a place where wind, water, and high prairie meet.
