About Lake Brownwood

Lake Brownwood is a Brown County CDP stretched along the western arm of the reservoir on Jim Ned Creek and Pecan Bayou, about 13 miles northwest of Brownwood. The lake was built after the devastating 1900 flood, with the dam completed in 1933 to control water and supply homes, farms, and ranches. Lake Brownwood State Park gives the community its most visible historic layer: the state acquired land in 1934, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews built cabins, patios, stairs, and other structures through the late 1930s. The reservoir still carries drinking and irrigation water, while the park keeps the shoreline tied to boating, fishing, camping, and the old New Deal construction story. Lake Brownwood is a place named for the water that made the surrounding settlement possible.
