About Lake Carroll
Lake Carroll is a census-designated place in northeastern Carroll County, built around a private lake and planned community about ten miles northeast of Mount Carroll and twenty miles southwest of Freeport. The association was established in 1972 after Russwood of Illinois acquired roughly 5,000 acres; the finished community centers on a 640-acre lake, private roads, and shared facilities. Members have access to an 18-hole golf course, marinas, pools, campground, equestrian area, and trails, while Eastland Community Unit School District 308 serves students from Lake Carroll, Lanark, and Shannon. The place is not a separate municipality, so the association supplies much of the local structure that a village government might otherwise provide. Lake Carroll is a lake-centered corner of northwest Illinois with its own rules, school ties, and recreation map.
