About Lake City

Lake City is Hinsdale County’s only incorporated municipality, set in the San Juan Mountains where Henson Creek meets the Lake Fork of the Gunnison. It began in 1875 as a supply center for the silver-and-gold mining boom and took its name from nearby Lake San Cristobal. When mining faded, summer visitors and improved roads pulled the town toward tourism. The Lake City Historic District, listed on the National Register, holds over 240 properties, including the 1877 courthouse still used for its original purpose. The Hinsdale County Museum adds the stranger local chapter: its collection includes memorabilia tied to Alfred Packer. Lake City is a high-mountain county seat with a mining past, a preserved center, and a lake just outside town.
