Lake City, IA

Despite what the name suggests, Lake City is famous for having "everything but a lake." The town was originally named after nearby Lake Creek, and while the pond east of town was drained generations ago, locals still embrace the running joke. Today, it is a welcoming Calhoun County community centered on a traditional downtown square with deep roots in the railroad era.

Day-to-day life revolves around the square, where you will find independent shops, community events, and the historic Capri Theatre. Lake City is also home to South Central Calhoun High School and Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, an internationally recognized workshop that has crafted fine instruments here for decades. Between the municipal pool, shaded parks, and an active public library, the town provides an easygoing pace alongside a strong sense of local pride.
