About Lake Dunlap

At the 2020 census, Lake Dunlap was a Guadalupe County census-designated place of 1,981 people on the Guadalupe River, about nine miles northwest of Seguin and within the San Antonio–New Braunfels orbit. The community grew around the reservoir and its lakeside homes, especially from the 1970s onward. New Braunfels borders the CDP to the north and west, while FM 725 links the area to Seguin and the wider river corridor. Here, the water is not scenery added after the fact; it is the reason the community has its shape.

The lake's biggest local story came on May 14, 2019, when the old dam's spillgate failed and the reservoir drained back toward the river channel. Residents organized around the repair, and a replacement dam brought the lake back in 2023. That sequence is now part of how people talk about Lake Dunlap: a residential river community that watched its defining lake disappear, then helped bring it back. The rebuilt shoreline sits alongside the older Guadalupe River, so the place carries both the engineered lake and the natural channel underneath it.
