Lake George, NY

Lake George is a Warren County community at the southern end of its namesake lake, where the Adirondack Northway brings a steady stream through the mountain corridor. The town was formed in 1810 as Caldwell and took the Lake George name in 1962. The lake itself runs roughly thirty-two miles north from the village, giving the place its unusual mix of water, highway, and old military routes. The shoreline has pulled the area toward tourism, but the older story is about passage through the Hudson River-Lake George-Lake Champlain corridor.

The history is close at hand. Lake George Battlefield Park preserves ground tied to the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, while Fort William Henry and the old Warren County Courthouse keep the military and civic chapters visible. Wiawaka, founded in 1903 as a retreat for women textile workers from Troy, adds a different thread: summer life, organized around the lake, with a long connection to women’s work and recreation. Lake George can feel like a resort town from the road, but its deeper character comes from the meeting of lake traffic, Adirondack geography, and centuries of people moving through the valley.
