Dow designed the community in the 1940s, choosing gentle curves and tree preservation over a rigid grid pattern. Lake Jackson's history as a planned town is visible throughout its older neighborhoods. Long before the city existed, the Karankawa people lived along these waterways, and the land later became a large sugar plantation in the 1840s. During the industrial expansion of World War II, Dow Chemical chose the location to build housing for its rapidly growing workforce. Alden Dow laid out neighborhoods that preserved the native forest canopy and introduced distinctive mid-century modern architecture. Lake Jackson officially incorporated as an independent city in 1944, and you can still explore this heritage today at the Jackson Plantation historical site and the local historical museum.

Major industrial plants drive the regional economy, and daily life in town stays leafy and relaxed. Lake Jackson features more than 1,400 acres of parkland, with miles of paved trails winding along Oyster Creek and through the quiet woods of the Dow Centennial Bottomlands. Sea Center Texas is a local favorite, offering free walk-through aquariums, wetland boardwalks, and a marine hatchery where families can feed the fish. Down the road, the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences hosts community theater, a planetarium, and natural science exhibits. With Surfside Beach only fifteen minutes south, weekends can easily include a morning bike ride under the oaks, an afternoon on the coast, and an evening show in town.
