Lake Koshkonong, WI

Lake Koshkonong is a Jefferson County census-designated place spread across the towns of Koshkonong and Sumner, with the lake setting the terms. The 2020 census counted 1,239 residents. The Rock River flows into the lake, and the Indianford Dam enlarged the naturally occurring water body in 1932, creating one of southern Wisconsin's larger lake landscapes. This is a place defined less by a traditional downtown than by shoreline, boat launches, marsh, and the roads connecting the surrounding townships. The lake is the address people use first.

Water is the daily organizing principle here: fishing, canoeing, pontoon boats, and small craft are the ordinary vocabulary, while the nearby Koshkonong Wildlife Area protects roughly 800 acres of marsh, shrub carr, and bottomland woods. The town park system adds Indian Mounds Park, Mush-Ko-Se-Day Park, and access to the Glacial River Bike Trail. Lake Koshkonong's local scoop is a lake community with a census label, two town governments, and enough water and wetlands to make the boundaries feel secondary.
