Lake Odessa, MI

At the 2020 census, Lake Odessa was an Ionia County village of 1,994 people on the northeast shore of Jordan Lake, close to the Barry County line. Its first settlers included the Russell family, who established Russell Settlement in 1839. The early community was called Bonanza, but the railroad changed its prospects and its location. When the Detroit, Lansing & Northern Railway came through in the 1880s, Humphrey R. Wager laid out a village on an 80-acre farm in 1887, and buildings and merchandise from the older settlement moved south to meet the tracks. The name Lake Odessa ties together Tupper Lake, Jordan Lake, and Odessa Township.

Lake Odessa still carries that combination of water, rail, and village planning. Fourth Avenue became the main street in 1887 and was paved in 1916; the village bought its park in 1900, and the old depot now sits with the local museum. A 1921 school fire led to another chapter of rebuilding, while volunteers created Swifty's Place playground in 1991. The village has been a Tree City USA community since 1987, but its strongest sense of place comes from the older arrangement: a main street by the lake, a former railroad town, and a small downtown that keeps finding uses for its past.
