Lake Poinsett, SD

Lake Poinsett is a lakeshore Census-designated place spread across Hamlin and Brookings counties, with the lake itself and its shore communities forming the place. U.S. 81 runs along the western shore, linking the area north to Watertown and south to Arlington; S.D. 28 crosses the rural road grid near the lake. The result is a community organized around water access and farm-country routes, with county lines running through the same shoreline.

The Lake Poinsett Recreation Area, about 14 miles northeast of Arlington off U.S. 81, gives the community a state-managed camping and boating base. The Lake Poinsett Water Project District works across the two counties on water quality, shoreline erosion, watershed issues, wildlife habitat, and the outlet structure. Schools are split among Hamlin, Estelline, and Arlington districts, depending on which side of the lake a household falls. Lake Poinsett is a place where the lake is the address, while roads, school boundaries, and water management cross county lines in practice.
