Lake Seneca, OH

Lake Seneca is a Williams County census-designated place north of Montpelier, centered on a private 270-acre all-sports lake. More than 1,400 lots include over 300 homes, some full-time and some seasonal. American Realty Service Corporation began the project in 1965, dammed local creeks, and finished the lake in 1966. The result was a planned lakeside neighborhood whose shoreline and roads, not an old village square, organize the community.

Lake Seneca's history has been tied to the upkeep of that dam. The development company went bankrupt in 1975; in 1996 a structural problem led Williams County emergency management to open the gates and drain the lake. The Lake Seneca Property Owners Association later took a $1.6 million loan to rebuild the dam, and the water returned in 2001. Today the association, beach, Compass Cafe, and lake roads give the CDP its everyday landmarks, while sediment at the river-fed end remains an ongoing concern. Lake Seneca is an Ohio community built around a lake and the work of keeping it there.
