Lake Tapps, WA

Lake Tapps is both a community and a managed reservoir, and the distinction matters in daily life. The Census-designated place covers more than 12 square miles around the lake rather than the water body alone and counted 12,962 residents in 2020. The reservoir was created in 1911 by diking four smaller lakes and diverting White River water for hydroelectric generation. Power production ended in 2004; Cascade Water Alliance bought the system in 2009 for possible future municipal water supply. Its operating agreements preserve White River flows and set seasonal recreation levels, so shoreline conditions are actively managed rather than natural. In July 2026, exceptionally low White River flows pushed the reservoir toward the bottom of its usual summer band, and Cascade advised residents to monitor levels before making decisions about boats and waterfront property. North Lake Tapps Park is a major public point of entry.

Its 135 acres include about 10,000 feet of shoreline, a sandy swim area, boat ramp, pocket beach, picnic facilities, trails, a peninsula path to a Mount Rainier viewpoint, and a summer life-jacket kiosk. Hot weekends can fill the parking area and trigger entry limits; mobile payment replaced the older parking system in May 2026, and park hours shorten after September. The health department samples the lake for recreation and posts advisories when conditions are unsafe. The CDP's 2020-through-2024 profile puts median household income at $148,005, with workers averaging about 37 minutes of travel to work. Housing in that profile was 89 percent owner-occupied; median owner-occupied value was $742,400, monthly mortgage-holder costs were $3,340, and median gross rent was $2,091. Park access, water-quality notices, and seasonal drawdowns are practical parts of living beside this reservoir.
