About Lakemont

Lakemont is a Blair County census-designated place spread across Allegheny and Logan townships between Altoona and Hollidaysburg. Its name is closely tied to Lakemont Park, which opened in 1894 as a trolley park connected to the Altoona and Logan Valley Electric Railway. The park’s Leap-the-Dips, built in 1902, is the last known surviving example of a side-friction figure-eight coaster and remains the place’s defining historical marker. The surrounding map includes I-99 to the west and the Altoona area around it, so Lakemont reads as both a census place and a park-centered corner of Blair County. The local shorthand is trolley park, old coaster, Altoona, and the townships around it.
