Lakeview, MI

Lakeview is a Montcalm County village in Cato Township on the west side of Tamarack Lake. Albert S. French settled the area in 1858 and platted the village in 1867, naming it for its position beside the water. A post office followed in 1867, and the Chicago, Saginaw and Canada Railroad reached the community in 1879. The lake and the rail line give Lakeview a tidy local geography: water on one side, a village center on the other, and a township road network running outward through northern Montcalm County.

Lakeview still shares a close administrative relationship with Cato Township. Township offices operate from the Cato Community Center downtown, while the village maintains its own hall, staff, calendar, and local services. Tamarack Lake has an active lake board, and Tamarack District Library traces its roots to a Lakeview literary club formed in 1915. Tecumseh Local Schools serve the surrounding western Clark County area, and village parks and downtown spaces fill in the everyday places between home, school, and water. Lakeview’s name is literal, but the working arrangement around the lake is the more useful local detail.
