About Lakeville

Lakeville is a town of 879 people in the 2020 census, south of South Bend in Union Township's St. Joseph County countryside. Euro-American settlement began in 1836, and the railroad's arrival in 1845 brought another push of growth. A post office has served the town since 1850, while the old Lakeville High School building, listed on the National Register, marks the era when the town's educational footprint was larger. By the 1890s, thirteen one-room schoolhouses served the area; those scattered classrooms were consolidated into a two-story elementary school in 1898.

Former Lakeville High School

Lakeville incorporated in 1902 and remains part of the South Bend-Mishawaka metropolitan area, close enough to share in the region's connections with its own small-town scale. Union-North United Schools now handles public education, and a St. Joseph County Public Library branch gives residents a local library stop. Hoosier Racing Tire also has its headquarters, track-services operation, and warehouse in town, adding a motorsports business to a community whose roots still show up in its schools, rail line, and civic institutions.
