About Lakeway
Lakeway began in 1962, when businessmen associated with the Gulfmont Hotel Company planned a hotel and resort community on a 2,700-acre ranch owned by Houston oilman and rancher Jack Josey. The Lakeway name followed Gulfmont’s earlier naming pattern for the Fairway Motor Hotel in McAllen, which overlooked a golf-course fairway. The Travis County city now sits beside Lake Travis about 16 miles west of Austin. Hurst Creek crosses Lakeway and empties into the lake on the city’s north side. Population grew from 11,391 in 2010 to 19,189 in 2020.
