Lakewood, IN

Lakewood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southeastern Vigo County, about nine miles southeast of Terre Haute. It sits around a small reservoir, with the water draining through a tributary of Honey Creek and eventually to the Wabash River. The Census Bureau first delineated Lakewood as a CDP in the 2022 American Community Survey. The name does the local orientation for you: this is a compact rural place whose roads and homes wrap around water rather than a traditional downtown.

Lakewood's wider setting is shaped by the Wabash. Vigo County and Indiana's conservation network manage river bottomlands, access points, and wildlife areas across the region, with fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and bird habitat along the river. Terre Haute supplies the larger shopping and employment circuit, while Riley Township provides the local frame. There is no big civic skyline here and no need for one.
