Lakin, KS

Set along Highway 50 in southwestern Kansas, Lakin is a quiet, friendly town of around 2,200 people that serves as the heart of Kearny County. Life here moves at a relaxed pace along the Arkansas River valley, surrounded by sprawling farmland and open prairie. The community takes pride in its frontier roots, which started back in the 1870s as a railroad stop and trading post along the Santa Fe Trail. You can easily spend an afternoon exploring that history at the Kearny County Museum, a sprawling complex featuring a restored 1893 schoolhouse, a classic round barn, and the town's original train depot.
