Lakin, KS

Lakin is the Kearny County seat in southwestern Kansas, set along U.S. 50/400 in the wide Arkansas River country. The 2020 census counted 2,205 residents. John O'Loughlin arrived in 1873, set up a trading post beside the new Santa Fe Railway, and helped turn the rail stop into a town. The railroad named the place for David Long Lakin, one of its former treasurers, and Lakin has served as county seat since 1894. On the local map, the highway, rail line, and old trail all point to the same beginning. The Kearny County Museum is the big payoff for that story, with a Santa Fe depot, restored 1893 schoolhouse, round barn, early homes, wagons, and machinery buildings in one complex.

Old wagon ruts remain a few miles away, putting the Santa Fe Trail right into the local landscape. Lakin is still a practical county-seat town: courthouse and county offices in town, farm and ranch country beyond the streets, and the Arkansas River corridor nearby. Lakin's local scoop is a railroad town that grew out of a trading post and still has the trail, depot, and county-seat pieces side by side.
