Lamar, TX

Lamar is an Aransas County census-designated place on the Lamar Peninsula, about 10 miles north of Rockport and 40 miles north of Corpus Christi. The 2020 census counted 724 residents. Named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas, it is a coastal place read through bays, marshes, live oaks, and long roads doing the work a conventional downtown might do elsewhere. Goose Island State Park sits nearby at the peninsula's southern end along St. Charles and Aransas bays. The peninsula is low and exposed, so weather and tides are part of the everyday read.

The coast does most of Lamar's organizing. Goose Island brings camping, fishing, birding, boating, and the Big Tree, while Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and the bay shoreline stretch out beyond the community. State Highway 35 and roads toward Rockport supply daily connections, but the water-and-wind landscape remains the main local reference. Lamar's local scoop is a small Gulf Coast settlement with a presidential namesake, a state park close by, and the bays setting the pace.
