Lamington, NJ

Lamington is a 135-person census-designated place within Bedminster Township, gathered around the crossroads of Lamington Road and Black River Road. The community's defining buildings sit in that old crossroads landscape: the Presbyterian meeting house was established in 1740, the present sanctuary was built in 1826, and the church was moved to higher ground across the road in 1885.

The surrounding cemeteries hold the deeper history. The Lamington Road cemetery includes Revolutionary soldiers and veterans of later wars, while the Cowperthwaite Road cemetery preserves the memory of enslaved and free Black members of the congregation. A 1918 schoolhouse became a church school in 1963 and has since been renovated for community use. Its 1889 Hook and Hastings organ remains in use, another small detail that keeps the historic building part of the present. The congregation still meets there. Lamington is tiny, yet its roads still connect a working church, old burial grounds, and a building that has changed roles across generations.
