Lamont, MI

Lamont is an unincorporated CDP on the north side of the Grand River in Ottawa County, in the Tallmadge and Polkton township area and the wider Grand Rapids region. The community is laid out along a river bend with a broad central boulevard, older homes, wooded hills, and farm country around it. Grand River access and the nearby Bass River trails give the place a strong outdoor setting, while Coopersville, Grand Haven, and Grand Rapids connect it to regional errands and jobs.

Harry and Zine Steele founded the settlement in 1833, when it was known as Steele's Landing. Boats on the Grand River and the old river trail came first; by the mid-nineteenth century, the landing had stores, hotels, a mill, and other small businesses. The name Lamont arrived in 1857. Today the village area has a post office, assisted living facility, homes, and a civic group that maintains its boulevard, flags, seasonal lights, socials, tours, and festivals. It is a small river community with a long memory and an active interest in keeping its old center in use.
