Langley, SC

Langley occupies a stretch of Horse Creek Valley in Aiken County, between Gloverville and Burnettown and within the Augusta regional orbit. It began as Kalmia, associated with Kalmia Mills, and took the name Langley in March 1870 when the Langley Manufacturing Company reorganized its holdings. The mill sat alongside the South Carolina Railway and built a village around work: houses for mill workers, a pond for water power, and a cotton-textile operation with hundreds of looms. The valley’s roads, ponds, and neighborhoods still carry that industrial arrangement.

Today Langley is a residential community whose daily connections run through Aiken, Augusta, and the other towns along Horse Creek. The former mill landscape remains part of local memory, while schools, churches, small businesses, and nearby industrial jobs fill out present-day life. Langley Pond and the Horse Creek-Midland Valley Museum in nearby Graniteville give residents places to encounter the valley’s textile past, even as the area’s economy has changed. The community’s scale comes from an old mill village, but its working geography now reaches across the South Carolina–Georgia line.
