Lansing, IA

Lansing is a Mississippi River town in Allamakee County, shaped by a bend in the river, steep bluffs, and the commerce that once moved through its landing. William Garrison arrived in 1848 and named the settlement for Lansing, Michigan; a post office opened in 1849. Grain, lumber, clams, pearl-button factories, fish, steamboats, and later the railroad all passed through the town's commercial map. Mount Hosmer, the bluff at the north end, gives the river setting a landmark you can see from town.

Main Street still runs toward the river, with Italianate and Greek Revival buildings, restored shops, hardware stores, outdoor outfitters, restaurants, and the Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank Community Center. The downtown was listed as a National Historic District in 2014, and preserved buildings still house shops and services. The Black Hawk Bridge once connected Lansing to Wisconsin; after its 2025 demolition, a replacement is planned for 2027 and interim ferry service carries the crossing.
