LaPlace, IL

La Place is a Piatt County census-designated place and unincorporated community in Cerro Gordo Township, in the corn-and-soybean country south of Cerro Gordo. It is a compact rural place rather than an incorporated town, with county roads and open fields doing most of the work of the local map. Piatt County’s historical society lists La Place among Cerro Gordo Township’s towns as far back as its 1867 and 1875 township records, and the county’s current planning documents still treat it as one of the township’s unincorporated residential centers.

The community’s character is tied to the surrounding farm landscape and the small institutions that outlast a formal downtown: LaPlace Cemetery, county roads, nearby Cerro Gordo, and the wider Piatt County network toward Monticello and Decatur. Older records also show a La Place veterans’ post, a hint of how even a very small settlement once had its own civic life. Today, La Place is the kind of Illinois place where the name on the map covers a handful of roads, homes, farm fields, and local memories, and where the county’s rural services matter more than a municipal boundary.
