Latimer, IA

Latimer began in 1882 when the Iowa Central Railroad laid its line through northern Franklin County. The city sits just north of Highway 3 and one mile east of Interstate 35, a location that keeps the old railroad town tied to the larger road network. Its most unusual local legacy belongs to Dr. Milton Wirtz, a Latimer dentist who developed a plastic eye prosthesis during the World War II era. His equipment is held by museums in Hampton, Cedar Falls, and the Smithsonian, giving this small Iowa city a medical-invention story that reaches far beyond its rail-era beginning.

Education and care are concentrated along the local center. CAL Elementary serves Pre-K through sixth grade, drawing students from Latimer, Coulter, and Alexander; older students attend Hampton-Dumont through a whole-grade-sharing arrangement.
