Lawnside, NJ

Tucked into Camden County, Lawnside is a tight-knit borough with a unique and proud history. Home to around 3,000 residents, it developed in the nineteenth century as a haven for formerly enslaved people and free Black families, eventually becoming the first self-governing Black municipality north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Today, that heritage is woven into everyday neighborhood life, giving the quiet residential streets a strong sense of community and identity.

For anyone considering a move here, Lawnside offers the peace of a small suburb alongside an easy commute. Local students attend Lawnside Public School through eighth grade before heading to neighboring Haddon Heights for high school. Landmarks like the historic Peter Mott House anchor the town, while Philadelphia and the shopping hubs of Cherry Hill are only minutes away by car or transit. It is a welcoming, quiet place to put down roots with a story you will not find anywhere else.
