Laytonville, CA

Laytonville is a Mendocino County community in Long Valley, 23 miles north-northwest of Willits and about 1,670 feet above sea level. Frank Layton, a Nova Scotian settler, built a blacksmith shop and house here in 1874; the post office followed in 1879. Tenmile Creek drains the valley toward the South Fork of the Eel River, with the river’s headwaters about five miles south. U.S. 101 runs through the center, linking the town to Willits, Ukiah, and Leggett along the Redwood Highway.

The highway is also where much of the town’s local service network is visible. The Laytonville Branch of the Mendocino County Library opened at 44960 Highway 101 in 2023, adding a county library branch, public computers, and free Wi-Fi to the town center. Some outlying mountain communities are 30 to 60 minutes from town, reached by gravel roads or private drives, and residents outside the water district rely on mountain springs or water trucked in. That layout makes Laytonville a town where the highway, water district, and library serve a much larger mountain area.
