Le Roy, MI

Le Roy is an incorporated village in Osceola County, set on Beaver Creek about eighteen miles north of Reed City. Its founding is a railroad story: as the Grand Rapids & Indiana was built through the township in 1871, James E. Bevins and other early business people chose a site beside the line. The first train arrived late that November, the village was incorporated in 1873, and Bevins’s 40-acre plat gave the new settlement a formal shape. Beaver Creek is a tributary of the Manistee River, so the town’s setting combines a small stream valley with the rolling, timbered country of central Michigan.

Le Roy grew as a shipping and service point for the surrounding woods and farms. The nineteenth-century history mentions a first store, the Westfall Brothers’ hotel, a post office receiving daily rail mail, nearby shingle mills, and a tramway that hauled lumber to the depot from Sawyerville. Those details make the village’s original job easy to picture: rail, timber, mail, and local trade all met in one small place. Modern Le Roy is much smaller than that early boomtown, but the creek, the railroad-built street plan, and the village name still carry the shape of its first chapter.
