Leary, TX

Leary sits in eastern Bowie County ten miles west of Texarkana and twelve miles east of New Boston. Interstate 30 marks the northern edge, while US 82 runs along the south side toward the Red River Army Depot. The city took its name from early settler Daniel T. Leary, gained a post office in 1894, and incorporated in 1964. Rail, highway, and depot roads give Leary a distinctly Texarkana-area geography. It is a small city, but the highways make its place in the regional map easy to follow.

Most of Leary is served by Leary Independent School District, with smaller sections assigned to Red Lick and Redwater ISDs. The Red River Army Depot was activated in 1941 after the government purchased farms and ranches west of Texarkana, and its maintenance and storage work helped shape the surrounding region during and after World War II. A state highway spur now links the depot to I-30 and US 82. Leary's daily map is therefore a blend of a small city grid, a school district, and the large transportation and military landscape just beyond its southern boundary.
