Lebec, CA

Lebec occupies Castac Valley in Kern County, between the San Emigdio and Tehachapi Mountains at the Tejon Pass. The unincorporated community sits at about 3,481 feet, roughly 40 miles south of Bakersfield, with I-5 climbing through the Grapevine nearby. Its name recalls Peter Lebeck, a French trapper killed by a grizzly in 1837; a piece of that story is displayed at Fort Tejon State Historic Park. The pass gives Lebec a strong physical identity, with the valley settlement and freeway corridor meeting around the old military route.

Fort Tejon remains one of the clearest local reference points. The former U.S. Army frontier fort was garrisoned from 1854 to 1864, and the state park now offers restored and reconstructed buildings, interpretive exhibits, trails, and scheduled guided tours. El Tejon Unified School District serves the mountain communities from elementary school through high school, adding a school-centered civic thread to the pass. Lebec's present map runs from the school district and valley roads to the I-5 exit and the fort grounds, where the nineteenth-century route is still visible.
