About Leith
Leith is a Grant County city with a 3.2-million-square-meter Census footprint. The North Dakota Public Service Commission identifies a 45-acre abandoned-mine site there, where lignite was mined from the early 1920s through the mid-1960s. Former underground workings, highwalls, spoil piles, sinkholes, and subsidence mark the site's industrial history. Leith's local geography is consequently legible through the transition from a coal-working landscape to a prairie town.
