Lemmon, SD

Lemmon is a Perkins County city of 1,160 residents in the 2020 census, set near the North Dakota line and the eastern edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Its town story begins with cattleman George Ed Lemmon, whose L-7 ranch leased about 865,000 acres of reservation land in the early 1900s. The settlement followed the Milwaukee Railroad westward; Lemmon was platted in 1907 and took the rancher's name. That combination of cattle, rail, and open range still shapes how the city fits into western South Dakota.

The Grand River Museum fills a downtown block with petrified wood, fossils, antiques, and artifacts from the surrounding country. Lemmon Petrified Park adds another stone landscape, while the city's schools include elementary and high school programs. Local streets connect those institutions to ranch roads, grassland, and the two national grasslands managed from the area. A day in Lemmon can move from Main Street and the museum to wide prairie, with the town's collections giving the region's deep time and working past a place indoors.
