The community began in 1869 when the railroad laid tracks through local farmland, taking the name Lenexa in honor of Na-Nex-Se, a Shawnee woman. Rich soil kept agriculture at the center of the local economy for decades, earning Lenexa the title of Spinach Capital of the World during the 1930s.
