Leonard, MI

Leonard is an Oakland County village in Addison Township, a small community shaped by the railroad that arrived in 1883. Leonard Rowland, a farmer and businessman, platted the first lots when the Pontiac, Oxford and Northern Railroad announced it would come through; the village was named for him and incorporated in 1889. A post office has operated here since 1884, giving the town a long-running postal marker. Rowland Hall and the old mill site keep the founder-and-railroad story close to the current village center.

The Leonard Mill/Elevator building is a surviving piece of that agricultural and rail history, and the village has been working toward its repair. The annual Strawberry Festival dates to the fire department’s founding in 1949, while the Addison Township Library, post office, fire station, and Leonard Nature Park fill out the local civic map. Oxford Community Schools serve village students, with Oxford High School as the zoned high school. Leonard’s story runs from railroad lots to mill buildings, festivals, and township services.
