Levittown helped define the modern American suburb when Levitt & Sons began transforming Bucks County farmland in the early 1950s. Builders constructed more than 17,000 homes in less than a decade using efficient assembly-line techniques. Instead of a rigid grid, the master plan featured gently curving streets designed to calm traffic, with neighborhood pools, elementary schools, and shopping plazas nestled directly inside each residential pocket. Buyers chose from classic mid-century models like the Levittowner and the Country Clubber, giving the area an architectural rhythm that still defines lower Bucks County. Today, the community is home to more than 50,000 residents who appreciate its established feel and convenient suburban layout.

The community also played an important role in northern civil rights history. Early sales policies and covenants kept Black families out of the development, mirroring discriminatory housing practices of the post-World War II era. That changed in August 1957 when William and Daisy Myers bought a house in Dogwood Hollow, becoming Levittown's first Black homeowners. Their arrival sparked intense protests and harassment from hostile crowds, prompting the governor to send the Pennsylvania State Police to restore order. Supported by friendly neighbors, local churches, and national advocates, the Myers family stood their ground and moved in. Today, state historical markers honor their courage and preserve their story as a turning point for fair housing in the region.

The neighborhoods sprawl across Bristol, Falls, and Middletown townships, as well as Tullytown Borough. Because of this split, your local property taxes, municipal services, trash pickup, and school assignments depend on which township border your property crosses. Real estate listings still refer to the original model names, but decades of renovations, added second stories, and expanded living rooms mean that two houses with the same floor plan can look completely different today. Daily life and commuting revolve around the main thoroughfares bordering the residential sections. Commuters benefit from the SEPTA Levittown train station along Bristol Pike, which provides straightforward rail service into Philadelphia and connections toward Trenton and New York. Nearby industrial and logistics hubs, including the expansive Keystone Trade Center on the former Fairless Works site, continue to bring major business investment and local jobs to the area.
