Lewisport, KY

Lewisport is a Hancock County home rule-class city on the south bank of the Ohio River, first known as Little Yellow Banks. James and John Prentis laid out the town in 1837, and the name changed to Lewisport in 1839 for John Lewis, an early surveyor and settler. The ferry landing gave the place its start; logging and flatboat building followed as the river became the town's working edge. Lewisport still sits in the Ohio floodplain, with Hawesville and Rockport, Indiana, providing the nearest road crossings, and the Hancock County Public Library branch supplying a local civic stop. For a newcomer, Lewisport makes sense from the river: ferry landing, flatboats, timber, and the long north-facing bank.
