Lewiston, ME

The Androscoggin River and the canals beside it still give downtown Lewiston the structure created by its nineteenth-century textile economy. The city's history dates the first timber dam and canal to 1808–1809; larger canals and mills followed after Boston investors supplied capital in the 1850s. Irish immigrants helped build that system, and the Grand Trunk station became the arrival point for thousands of French Canadians beginning in the 1870s. Those layers remain legible in the mill buildings, canals, and riverfront public spaces. Indoors, the Franco Center presents music, dance, theater, and events grounded in Franco-American and other cultures, while The Public Theatre stages six to eight productions in a season and Maine MILL interprets local labor and industrial history. Lewiston Public Library provides free cards to people who live, pay taxes, work for the city, or attend school in Lewiston or Auburn, along with meeting rooms, computers, language-learning resources, and youth programs.
