About Lewiston

Lewiston grew out of the Michelson and Hanson Lumber Company, which platted the community in 1891 beside East Twin Lake. The name comes from Lewis Jensen, an early lumber investor, and the first town had sawmills, a rail line to Grayling, hotels, shops, churches, and the rough edges that came with a timber camp. Once the pine ran out, the mills left and Lewiston had to find a new rhythm. Cabins, resorts, lakes, and later tourism filled in around the old lumber grid, while the historical society museum occupies an original 1892 home. Lewiston is northern Michigan timber country with a lake-town second act.
