Lewistown, IL

Lewistown is Fulton County’s county seat, but the town’s identity stretches beyond the courthouse. It was first called Fulton Courthouse when the post office opened in 1824, then became Lewistown in 1831, after Lewis Winans Ross, son of founder Ossian M. Ross. The city sits southwest of Peoria near the Spoon River and Illinois River country, so local history runs through both town streets and bottomland. The river valley keeps the city tied to the wider Illinois River corridor.

Edgar Lee Masters made Lewistown famous through Spoon River Anthology, and his connection still shows up in the local library and city attractions. Six miles east, Emiquon restores about 7,000 acres of Illinois River wetland, while Dickson Mounds and the Dickson Mounds Museum sit near the Spoon River and carry the area’s much older archaeological story.
