Liberal, KS

Liberal got its name in the 1870s when a generous homesteader named Seymour Rogers offered free well water to thirsty travelers crossing the plains, prompting folks to remark that he was "mighty liberal." Today, the town sits in southwest Kansas just a few miles north of the Oklahoma border, right at the crossroads of U.S. 54 and U.S. 83. The surrounding plains are deep cattle and farming country, and major operations like the National Beef processing plant anchor the local economy and keep commercial traffic moving through the area.

For higher education, Seward County Community College offers solid vocational programs in healthcare, agriculture, and industrial trades alongside two-year transfer degrees. The community also has plenty of personality. Every Shrove Tuesday, local women sprint down the street holding frying pans to compete in the International Pancake Race against runners in Olney, England, a friendly rivalry dating back to 1950. Residents and visitors can also explore vintage aircraft at the Mid-America Air Museum or take a stroll through Dorothy's House and the Land of Oz, which embraces the classic Kansas movie lore.
