About Liberty

Liberty sits at the headwaters of the Green River and serves as Casey County's seat, so the town's map is tied to both courthouse work and water. Colonel William Casey and a small group of settlers followed the Green River into the area in 1791, and Liberty was established in 1806 before becoming the county seat in 1808. The city's name carried the patriotic mood of the veterans who founded it. Today the Green leaves town through a series of bends used for short floats and fishing, with the Old Water Plant access starting right in Liberty. This is central Kentucky with a courthouse square, wooded ridges, and a river that begins nearby.
