Linn Valley, KS

Linn Valley is a Kansas city built around a private lake community, with a different shape from an old rail depot or courthouse square. Development began in the 1970s around Linn Valley Lakes, and the city incorporated in 1998. Most of the city's land area lies inside the private lake community, so the shoreline, residential roads, and recreation areas do much of the work a traditional center might do. The city sits in western Linn County, about 38 miles south of Overland Park and within reach of Kansas Highway 69.

Linn Valley's municipal work includes planning and zoning for the lake development and the smaller area beyond it. Prairie View USD 362 serves local students, while Mound City and larger Kansas City-area towns supply county and regional services. The lake is both the town's geography and its social calendar: homes, water, seasonal activity, and shared neighborhood rules occupy the same map. Linn Valley feels like a planned retreat that became a city, retaining the lake-centered layout that brought the first residents to this corner of Kansas.
