Lino Lakes, MN

Fifteen lakes, seasonal wetlands, and a regional park reserve give Lino Lakes a different physical pattern from many outer Twin Cities suburbs. The city covers about 33 square miles in Anoka County, with Interstate 35W and 35E providing its main regional routes. At its center, the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve protects about 5,500 acres and includes or borders nine lakes; a 2025 city account says the reserve was created in 1974 and occupies roughly one-sixth of Lino Lakes. The linked waterways long supported Dakota harvesting of wild rice and game before non-Native settlement. From 21,399 people in the 2020 census, Lino Lakes reached an estimated 23,220 by July 2025.

Census housing estimates for 2020–2024 put owner occupancy at 92.1 percent and median value at $407,200; median monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,168, while median gross rent was $1,874. Much of local recreation follows this lake-and-wetland geography. The city's parks map shows local trails and parks connecting with the county reserve, while Wargo Nature Center supports canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, kicksledding, and summer camps. Anoka County's 2026 calendar also included guided bird walks, a kids' fishing clinic, naturalist programs, and an Earth Day cleanup and celebration at Wargo, giving the reserve a regular role in environmental education as well as outdoor access.

Chomonix Golf Course occupies another part of the reserve. For indoor activity, the city-run Rookery Activity Center has a gym, lap and splash pools, a fitness floor, group classes, swim instruction, and youth programming; it is available through memberships, multivisit passes, or day admission. The same landscape places practical limits on development: open water accounts for about 14 percent of the city's land, and local planning treats its creeks, shallow lakes, wetlands, and drainage systems as a connected resource. The chain of lakes therefore shapes recreation, stormwater planning, wildlife habitat, and the location of roads and neighborhoods.
