Lisbon, ND

Lisbon is the Ransom County seat in southeastern North Dakota, set in the Sheyenne River Valley. Joseph L. Colton founded the city in 1880 and named it for Lisbon, New York, his wife's hometown. The 2020 census counted 2,204 residents. Downtown Lisbon still has the compact arrangement you want from a county seat: an opera house, civic buildings, shops, and the Scenic Theater, which has shown movies since 1911. The theater's continuous run is one of the town's signature claims. The river still matters.

The North Dakota Veterans Home was established beside Lisbon in 1891, and its campus carries a full small-town vocabulary of its own, with a main street, bank, library, barber shop, museum, theater, and chapel. Beyond town, the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway leads toward Fort Ransom State Park and the Sheyenne National Grasslands. Lisbon ties those larger landscapes to a working main street, giving the county seat a strong sense of place without needing a big-city backdrop.
