Litchfield, MI

Litchfield is a Hillsdale County city where the St. Joseph River and the North Country National Scenic Trail meet the town center. Henry Stevens settled the area in 1834; Hervey Smith and his son David platted it as Smithsville in 1836, and the post office adopted Litchfield the next year. The river gives the city its physical edge and its park setting: Firemen’s Park sits just south of downtown along the St. Joseph, with the trail-town route passing through the center.

That trail connection gives Litchfield a role beyond its surrounding farm country. The trail-town route brings hikers toward downtown and Firemen’s Park, while Litchfield Community Schools serves the city and parts of nearby townships. Local history is visible in the churches and memorials too: the Congregational church building dates to 1872, the First Baptist Church was dedicated in 1913 after local stone-gathering efforts, and a park bell honors poet Rose Hartwick Thorpe. River, trail, school, and stone churches give Litchfield a compact set of bearings, with the national trail running straight through the local story.
