Livermore, KY

Livermore is a home-rule city in McLean County at the confluence of the Green and Rough rivers. The 2020 census counted 1,230 residents. U.S. 431 and Kentucky 136 serve the city, while the Green River's navigation channel connects its river history to the Ohio River. The McLean County Public Library's Livermore branch occupies a building from about 1880 and includes local-history displays and an art gallery.

William A. Brown laid out Livermore in 1837 as a river landing and trading post. The name has two local explanations: one ties it to James Henry Livermore, an early merchant at the mouth of Rough Creek; the other credits civil engineer Alonzo Livermore, who worked on Green River locks and dams. River traffic, farm shipments, and the bridge crossings shaped the city after that. Livermore still sits between two rivers, with its library, city offices, and waterfront roads carrying the old trading-place story into current life. The bridge is part of that local geography.
